Moving day feels chaotic mostly because of the things you forgot to plan for β not the packing itself. This checklist breaks your move into three simple stages so nothing slips through the cracks.
Quick tip: Start this checklist the moment you confirm your moving date, even if it's a month away. The earlier you start, the less last-minute scrambling on moving day.
4 Weeks Before: Plan & Declutter
What to do
- Book your packers and movers and confirm the moving date in writing
- Go room by room and sort items into Keep, Donate, Sell and Discard
- Start using up perishable food and cleaning supplies you can't carry
- Collect important documents β property papers, school records, medical files β into one folder
- Note down your new address to start updating it later
1 Week Before: Prepare & Confirm
What to do
- Confirm final move timing and vehicle access with your movers
- Start packing non-essential items β books, dΓ©cor, out-of-season clothes
- Label boxes clearly by room, and mark "fragile" wherever needed
- Update your address with the bank, insurance, and any subscriptions
- Arrange for internet/DTH disconnection at the old place and reconnection at the new one
- Set aside a box of essentials β chargers, medicines, toiletries, a change of clothes β that will travel with you, not the truck
1 Day Before: Final Checks
What to do
- Pack the last of the essentials β kitchen items, bedding you're using tonight
- Charge your phone and keep the movers' contact number handy
- Clear parking space for the moving truck at both ends if needed
- Do a final walkthrough of every room and cupboard for anything left behind
- Keep cash and valuables (jewellery, documents) with you personally, not in the shipment
On Moving Day
Be present when the team arrives so you can point out fragile or high-value items directly. Walk through the inventory list with the crew before the truck leaves, and again when it arrives at your new home β this is the single best way to make sure nothing goes missing in transit.
A Few Things People Often Forget
- Returning items borrowed from neighbours or the society office
- Cancelling or transferring gym, gas, and newspaper subscriptions
- Backing up router settings/Wi-Fi passwords before disconnecting
- Taking photos of electronics wiring before disconnecting them, so reassembly is easy
